US Environmental Protection Agency / EPA
Origins of the EPA
Representative George Brown from Los Angeles was a key player in legislation founding the Environmental Protection Agency.
As the LA Times noted (without pomp or circumstance) in George's obituary in 1999: "He championed the creation of the federal Environmental Protection Agency". The creation of the EPA was in many ways Congressman George Brown's vision achieved..."
GreenPolicy360's founder/siterunner listened to Representative Brown talking about bringing together different government agencies into a collaborative umbrella, an "Environmental Protection Agency". (Politician Brown knew President Nixon needed a political and electoral 'win' and so George led a consolidation of existing agencies into a package...) Representative George Brown was at the forefront, as his eulogies years later pointed out, in making the creation of the EPA a reality.
George believed, strongly believed and went on over the following decades to advocate that science, 'big science', was necessary to understand 'Earth System Science' . George Brown was instrumental in writing the first National Climate Act and over decades, he shepherded the start up of the Atmospheric and Earth science programs and ongoing missions that continue to this day...
And so we see, in many way, science became a centerpiece in The Modern Environmental Movement
